Course Information
Description	A survey of the social, political, economic, cultural, and intellectual history of the United States from the pre-Columbian era to the Civil War/Reconstruction period. United States History I includes the study of pre-Columbian, colonial, revolutionary, early national, slavery and sectionalism, and the Civil War/Reconstruction eras. Learning Outcomes	After successfully completing this course, students will be expected to: 1. Relate the events that led to the exploration and colonization of early America 2. Summarize reasons for colonial discontent and actions that led to revolution and independence 3. Demonstrate an understanding of our documents of democracy 4. Describe our foreign policy as it developed in the 19th century 5. Analyze stages of economic development as the United States became an industrialized nation 6. Realize the causes of sectionalism as they moved us toward civil war 7. Discuss the major features of Reconstruction and their political impact

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	Communication: For any questions or concerns not covered in the syllabus or weekly schedule, please email me at kibbetm@lamarpa.edu and I will get back to you as quickly as I can—usually within 24 hours unless it is a weekend. Emails received after 4:00pm on Fridays may not be answered until Monday. I do not use Blackboard email, so you will not get a response if you use the Blackboard messaging system. In addition, when you email me you must use your LSC-PA email account, include your first and last name, and your class and section number. The class is 1301. The section number for this course is 72. For any announcements concerning class, I will send out an email announcement on Blackboard, so please make a point to check often. You can also make an appointment for an online “real-time” meeting via Blackboard Collaborate. If you find yourself struggling in the class, I recommend doing this since it is difficult to communicate back and forth via email. Late Assignment Policy:     A) Discussion Board Responses: Discussion board responses open from the beginning of the course. Your initial post and your response to another student is due by the due date @ 6:00pm. They are intended to count toward your participation and engagement in the class. As such, no late discussion responses will be accepted. You can miss 1 assignment with no penalty. If you complete all the discussion board responses, your lowest grade will be dropped. B) Writing Assignment: You may turn your paper in early. Late assignments will be accepted only up to two days after the due date and will be penalized ten points for each late day. No writing assignments will be accepted after this two-day grace period. C) Video Summaries: Video summaries are open from the beginning of the course and should be submitted by 6:00pm on their due date. Late video summaries will be accepted only up to one day after the due date and will be penalized ten points. D) Quizzes/Final Exam: I essentially have a no make-up policy for quizzes and the final exam. For the quizzes, you are only required to submit 4 out of 5 quizzes, so if you miss one it will not affect your grade. For the Final Exam, I only have a limited amount of time to get final grades in by the deadline, so if there is a situation that affects all the days that the Final Exam is open, you must contact me immediately. The quizzes and Final Exam are open for several days each. You should plan out your time accordingly. The only way that I will re-set a quiz or the Final Exam would be if the Blackboard site itself malfunctioned and if that is the case, you need to provide a screenshot or picture of the error message with your request to re-set it. In addition, I reserve the right to administer a different version of the quiz or exam. Important Information About Taking Quizzes and Exam: It is your responsibility to ensure that you have an adequate amount of time, the proper atmosphere, and a secure connection to the internet to take the quizzes and the Final Exam. I strongly suggest using a laptop or desktop computer—not your phone—and using a wired internet connection to avoid wi-fi fluctuations that may occur. Finally, you should also give yourself enough time to take the quizzes and the final exam— don’t wait until the last minute—so that if your internet is “down” you can find another place to take it. Blackboard is a stable platform, so the ONLY way I will consider “re-setting” a quiz or the Final Exam is if you submit a screenshot or picture of the error message showing that the site itself was at fault; just “forgetting” that you had a quiz or exam due will not suffice for a reason to re-set it, so do not ask. You have plenty of time to take the quizzes and the final exam, so plan ahead.
Attendance Policy	Since this is an online class, your attendance/participation will be graded through your participation in discussion forums with other students and myself. It is important that you keep up with the discussions and make every effort to fully participate.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
